What happens when an Italian wine producer goes on holiday in the Netherlands? Inevitably, she starts thinking about wine.
I have travelled across the Netherlands for many years, mostly for work. This July, however, I decided to experience the country differently. I chose Leiden as a base and travelled with my seven-year-old daughter between The Hague, Delft, Amsterdam and the beaches of the North Sea.
Dutch street food soon became part of the journey. Rich, flavourful and often involving fried food or creamy sauces, it is quite different from what we are used to eating in Italy. And whenever I taste something interesting, I have a family habit: I start wondering which of our wines would I drink with this? So I experimented.
These are four unexpected combinations of wijn en spijs - Dutch food paired with Italian wines from Monte del Frà.
